A student kept leaves of Bryophyllum in the soil. After few days new plants were grown from them. Why ?

Bryophyllum leaves bear buds in their notches along the margin. When a leaf kept in the soil, the buds come in contact of the soil and develop into plantlets. These plantlets later grow into new plants.
