If atomic mass of carbon was set at 100 u, what would be the value of Avogadro's number ?

A

`6.02xx10^(23)`

B

`6.02xx10^(25)`

C

`5.01xx10^(24)`

D

`6.02xx10^(21)`

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
C

Mass of 1 atom of Carbon `(C^(12))=(12)/(6.02xx10^(23))g`
As atomic mass of `C^(12)` is 100 u, number of atoms present in 1 g atom or 100 g is Avogadro's number on this new scale.
`:.` Avogadro's number `=(100)/(12//6.02xx10^(23))`
`=(100xx6.02xx10^(23))/(12)=5.01xx10^(24)`

Mole concept is an important tool for dealing with chemical calculations. The element have atomic mases while compounds have molecular masses or molar masses. Mole is infact, a collection of Avogadro's number (N_(A)) of the particles of a substance whether element or compound.
