Which of the following has the smallest heat of hydrogenation per mole ?

A

1-Butene

B

trans-2-Butene

C

cis-2-Butene

D

1,3-Butadiene.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
D

1,3-Butadiene `(CH_(2) =CH-CH=CH_(2))` has two double bonds while all other alkenes have one double bond. Therefore it has maximum heat of hydrogenation `(226 kJ mo^(-1))`. All other alkenes have one double bond. In case of these alkenes , heat of hydrogenation depends upon its stability. More the stability of alkene, lesser is its heat of hydrogenation.

Out of these three alkenes, but-1-ene is least stable (lesser hyperconjugation). Out of cis and trans but-2-ene, the trans isomer is more stable. Therefore. heat of hydrogenation is minimum in case of trans-but-2-ene.
