The intermediate during the addition of `HCl` to propene in the presence of peroxide is :

A

`CH_(3)overset(cdot)CHCH_(2)Cl`

B

`CH_(3)overset(oplus)CHCH_(3)`

C

`CH_(3)CH_(2)overset(cdot)CH_(2)`

D

`CH_(3)CH_(2)overset(oplus)CH_(2).`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
B

Peroxide effect occurs through the formation of a free radical intermediate. However peroxide effect is observed only in case of addition of HBr to an alkene. Therefore, there is no effect of the presence of peroxide during the addition of HCl to an alkene. The reaction will proceed as follows

`A" "2^(@)` carbocation is formed in the first step. It is due to greater stability of `a" "2^(@)` carbocation than `a" "1^(@)` carbocation.
