The o,p-directing byt deactivating group...

The o,p-directing byt deactivating group is

A

`-NH_(2)`

B

`-OH`

C

R-(alkyl)

D

X-(halogen)

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
D

Due to large size of X(halogen) the lone pair does not participate into resonance with C of benzene fully. Further X is more electronegative than C.

Name an ortho-and para-directing deactivating group.

Meta-directing and deactivating group in the aromatic electrophilic substitution is :

Which of the following is an o-, p- directing but deactivating substituent in an electrophilic aromatic substitution :

The typical reaction of benzene and other aromatic compounds are electrophilic substitution. Presence of electron donating group activates the ring towards electrophilic substitution, while presence of electron withdrawing group deactivates the ring towards electrophilic substituion but at the same time activates the ring towards nucleophilic subsituion. Some groups are predominantly meta-directing and all of these are deactivating. Except halogen, most of the o- and p- directing groups are activating groups. underset(Delta)overset(C_(2)H_(5)Cl.AlCl_(3))rarr(A) major. A is trisubstituted benzene. The structure of A is :

In the electrophilic substituion of benzene ring, the second substituent is directed by the group already present. Electron releasing groups (+I and +M) are ortho-para-directing and activating, whreas the electron withdrawing groups (-I and -M) are meta-directing and deactivating. Halogens are placed under the category of +T (Tautomeric) groups because they have -Ibdyctuve abd +Mesomeric effect. These groups are deactivating but ortho-para-directing. In the introduction of third group to the benzene ring, the product of minimum steric gindrance is formed. A deactivating group in electrophilic substitution reaction :
