In case of alkyl fluorides, the orientation of elimination is not governed by the stability of the alkene being formed (Saytzeff rule) but is governed by the acidity of the `beta`-hydrogen to be eliminated (Hofmann rule). Consequently, the major product is formed by elimination of the more acidic `beta`-hydrogen. For example in 2 fluro butane (I) due to + I effect of the `CH_(3)` group, the `beta`- hydrogen on C-1. Therefore, the `beta`-hydrogen from C-1 being more acidic is lost more easily and hence the major product is but-1-ene.
