Anhydrous gypsum `(CaSO_4)` when heated `1200^(@)`C decomposes slightly.
`2CaSO_4overset(1200^(@)C)iff2CaO+2SO_2+O_2`
However, to get quantitative yield of `SO_2` anhydrous gypsum is heated with coke, when calcium sulphide is first formed.
`CaSO_4+2CtoCaS+2CO_2uparrow`
On heating further to `1200^(@)`,calcium sulphide reacts with `CaSO_4` to give `SO_2`
`CaS+3CaSO_4iff2CaO+4SO_2uparrow`
