BeO does not dissolve in water. BeO readily dissolves in an aqueous solution of `BeCl_2` (in this behaviour Be and Mg are similar-a solution of MgO in `MeCl_2` is Sorels cement). BeO reacts with dil. HCl to give `BeCl_2` and with NaOH gives sodium beryllite.
