An alkyl halide reacts with a group 14 e...

An alkyl halide reacts with a group 14 element, 'Y' at 570 K with Cu as a catalyst producing a dialkyl chloro compound 'Z'. The compound 'Z' on hydrolysis gives another compound which is a strong water repellent and quite inert chemically. The dioxide of 'Y' is acidic in nature. The alkyl halide can also be obtained from methan after mono-substitution. The comp 'Y' and 'Z' are

A

`C,C_(2)H_(4)Cl_(2)`

B

`Sn,(CH_(3))_(2)SnCl_(2)`

C

`Si,(C_(2)H_(5))_(2)SiCl_(2)`

D

`Si,(CH_(3))_(2)SiCl_(2)`

The correct Answer is:
D

Since the alkyl halide is obtained from `CH_(4)` after monosubstitution it must be `CH_(3)Cl` or `CH_(3)Br` or `CH_(3)I` or `CH_(3)F`. However, this alkyl halide reacts compound. Hence alkyl halid is `CH_(3)Cl`. Also Y can be either C or Si since it gives an acidic dioxide. But the hydrolysis of Z (produced from Y) gives a water repellant and chemically inert compound. it must be a polymeric compound, that too of Si, i.e., silicone. carbon cannot give such a polymeric compound. hence Y is si. the reaction involved by
