Which of the following is the strongest acid?

A

`ClO_3(OH)`

B

`ClO_2(OH)`

C

`SO(OH)_2`

D

`SO_2(OH)_2`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
A

The more the electronegativity and oxidation number of the central atom, more is the strength of the acid. Thus out of oxyacids of S and Cl, oxyacids of Cl will be stronger (electronegativity of Cl gt S). Out of `ClO_3` (OH) with O.S. of Cl +7 and ClO, (OH) with O.S. of Cl = +5. `ClO_3 (OH)` is a stronger acid.
