Arrange the acids (I) `H_2SO_3`, (II) `H_3PO_3` and (III) `HClO_3` in the decreasing order of acidity.

A

`I gt III gt II `

B

`I gt II gt III`

C

`III gt II gtI`

D

`II gt III gt I.`

The correct Answer is:
C

For oxy-acids, more the electronegativity of the central atom, more is the acidic character Electronegativity of S, P and Cl is in the order P lt S lt Cl .
Thus `HClO_3` (III) will be the strongest acid Another factor in its favour is the highest oxidation state of the central atom Cl (+5). It is also supported by their `pK_a` values `H_2SO_3 (pK_a = 2), H_3PO_3 (pK_a= 13), HClO_3 (pK_a= -3)`
The only correct option with (III) at the top is (C).
