What is the maximum number of electron in an atom that can have the quantum numbers `n = 4, m_(l) =+1`?

A

4

B

15

C

3

D

6

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
D

For `n=4, l=0, l=1, l=2, l=3,`
For `l=0 , m_(l)=0`
For `l=1 , m_(l)=-1, 0+1`
For `l=2 , m_(l)=-2, -1, 0, +1, +2`
For `l=3 , m_(l)=-3, -2, -1, 0, +1, +2, +3`
This shows that three orbitals have `m_(l)=+1` and there are therefore, 6 electrons with `m_(l)=+1`
