Suppose the elements X and Y combine to form two compounds of `XY_(2) and X_(3)Y_(2)`. When 0.1 mole of `XY_(2)` weighs 10 g and 0.05 mole of `X_(3)Y_(2)` weighs 9 g , what are tha atomic masses of X and Y ?

Let the atomic masses by the elements X and Y be x and y respectively
For compound `XY_(2)` , No. of moles (0.1 mol) `= (W)/(("Molar mass"))=((10g))/((x+2y))`
or `(x+2y)=((10g))/((0.1mol))=100g mol^(-1)`....(i)
For compound `X_(3)Y_(2)` , No. of moles `(n) (0.05 mol) = (W)/("Molar mass")=((9g))/((3x+2y))`
or ` (3x+2y)=((9g))/((0.05mol))=180 gmol^(-1)`....(ii)
Subtracting (i) from (ii) ,
`(3x+2y)-(x+2y)=(180-100)=80`
or `2x=80 orx=(80)/(2)=40`
`(x+2y)=100or2y=100-40=60ory=30`.
