Can a nickel spoon be used to stir a sol...

Can a nickel spoon be used to stir a solution of copper sulphate ? Support your answer with reason.
(Given : `E_(Ni^(2+)//Ni)^(@)=-0.25" V", E_(Cu^(2+)//Cu)^(@)=0.34" V"`)

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`E_(cell)^(@)=E_(cathode)^(@)-E_(anode)^(@)=(E_(Cu^(2+)//Cu)^(@))-(E_(Ni^(2+)//Ni)^(@))=0.34-(-0.25)=0.59 V`
Reaction is feasible. Thus, nickel will displace copper from copper sulphate solution. Therefore, nickel spoon cannot be used to stir a solution of copper sulphate.
