Explain why is sodium less reactive than...

Explain why is sodium less reactive than potassium.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

This is mainly due to higer ionisation enthalpy `(Delta_(i)H_(l)=496kJ mol^(-1))` of sodiumas comared to postassium `(Delta_(i)H_(l)=419kJ mol^(-1))`. As a result, the potassium is more electropositive and stronger reducing agent the sodium. It also reacts with water more violently than sodium. Thus, sodium is less reactive than potassium.
