Explain why can alkali and alkaline earth metals not be obtained by chemical reduction methods?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The metals belonging to both these families are very stong reducing agents. It is, therefore not possible to reduce by their oxides by reacting with common reducing agents like carbon (coke), zinc etc. These are normally isolated to carrying out the electrolysis of the salts of these metals in the molten state.
