All compounds of alkali metals are easily soluble in water but lithium compounds are more soluble in organic solvents. Explain.

The compounds of lithium are moslty covalent in nature. This is due to the small size of the `Li^(+)` ion and its high polarising power. As a result, it causes the polarisation of the anion as well. Therefore, the two oppositely charged ions come closer and the compounds have covalent character. These are therefore, mostly soluble in organic solvent. On the other hand, the compounds of other alkali metals are of ionic nature and are therefore, water soluble.
