Why do beryllium and magnesium not impart colour to the flame in the flame test?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Both these elements have small atomic size and high ionisation enthalpies. The energy of the flame is not sufficient to cause the excitation of the electrons in the atoms of these elements. They therefore, donot impart any colour to the flame.
