Stannous chloride and ferric chloride c...

Stannous chloride and ferric chloride cannot be kept in the same container. Assign reasons.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

A redox reaction will immediately start as a result of which `Sn^(2+)` ion will be oxidised to `Sn^(4+)` ion while `Fe^(3+)` ion will be reduced simultaneously to `Fe^(2+)` ion.
`2Fe^(3+)+Sn^(2+)rarr2Fe^(2+)+sn^(4+)`
Therefore, the two salts cannot be kept in the same container.
