How is lithium aluminium hydride prepared? What is its important use?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

It is prepared by the slow addition o f a calculated amount of anhydrous aluminium chloride to the paste of lithium hydride prepared in dry ether or tetraheydrogfuran (THF).
`4LiH+AlCl_(3)underset("or THF")overset("Dry ehter")rarrLiAIH_(4)+3LiCl`
LiCi gets precipitated in non-aqueous solvent and can be removed by fitration . the filtrate can be evapourated to dryness in the absence of air and carbon dioxide to form a grey solid. Normally , the rea gent is empolyed in the presence of anhydraous ether and is a vry useful reducing agent for the orgnic compounds, partcularly those containing carbonyl groups 9aldehydes, ketones, acids, esters etc. ) to alcohols.
