Carbon monoxide `(CO)` acts as a poison for the catalyst iron as well as promoter molybdenum which are used in the Haber's process. Moreover, it is likely to combine with iron to from iron carbonyl `Fe(CO)_(5)` Therefore it is necessary to remove it from the reaction mixture by suitable means.
