Why is ester hydrolysis slow in the beginning and becomes fast after sometime ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In ester hydrolysis, an acid and alcohol are formed as the products. For example,
`underset("Ester")(RCOOR)+H_(2)Otounderset("Acid")(RCOOH)+underset("Alcohol")(ROH)`
Acid will release `H^(+)` ions in solution which act as catalyst (auto-catalysis) for the reaction. That is way, the hydrolysis is slow in the beginning and becomes faster later on.
