What is adsorption isotherm ? Distinguish between Frundlich adsorption isotherm and Langmuir adsorption isotherm.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Adsorption isotherm represents the variation of the amoung or the gas adsorbed and the corresponding pressure at a certain temperatur, The mathematical from of the two adsorption isotherms are :
Freundlich Adsorption Isotherm : `x/m=Kp^(1//x).`
Langmuir Adsorption Istherm `**:x/m=(ap)/(1+bp)`
The main points of distinction in the two adsorption, isotherms are :
(i) Freundlich Adsorptio isotherm is applicable to all types of adsorption whereas Langmuir Adsorption isotherm is applicable mainly to chemical adsorption or chemisorption.
(ii) Freundlich adsorption istherm fails at high pressure of the gas whereas Langmuir Adsorption isotherm can be applied under all pressures.
