What role does adsorption play in heterogeneous catalysis ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Heterogeneous catalysis is generally carried on the surface ot the finely divided matals of the transition series. Due to the availablilty of large surface area, the reacting species get adsorbed on the reacting species get adsorbed on the surface either by physical adsorption or by chemisorption. The adsorbed species get opportunity to mutually combine to from the products which are released or desorbed from the surface so as to accommodate more reacting species.
