Why is sulphide ore of copper heated in a furnace afer mixing with silica?

Text Solution

Sulphide ore of copper called iron pyrite `CuFeS_(2)` upon heating in air (oxygen) forms ferrous oxide as one of the products. It is basically an impurity The role of silica `(SiO_(2))` is combined with FeO to form `FeSiO_(3)` in the form of slag. Thus, the impurity of FeO in the ore is removed
`FeO(s) +SiO_(2)(s) overset("heat")to underset(("Slag"))(FeSiO_(3)(s))`
