What should be the considerations during the extraction of metals by electrochemical method?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In the electrochemical method for the extraction of metals, the following considerations are significant.
(i) The reactivity of the metal which is produced. For example, if sodium is isolated by this method, it immediately reacts with water violently. This problem does not arise in case of metal like copper.
(ii) The choice of the electrodes is of great significance. For example, when aqueous solution of `CuSO_(4)` is electrolyed using inert electrodes (e.g. Pt-electrodes), the products formed are different than in case when attackable electrodes are used.
