Galena (an ore) is partially oxidised by passing air through it at high temperature. After some time the passage of air stopped, but the heating is continued in a closed furnace such that the contents undergo self-reduction. The weight (in kg) of Pb produced per kg of `O_(2)` consumed is_ ,
`"Atomic weights in g mol"^(-1): O =16,S=32,Pb=207`

Text Solution

It is an example of Auto-reduction of PbS. The reactions involved are :
`2PbS+3O_(2) to 2PbO+2SO_(2)`
`2PbO+PbS to 3Pb+SO_(2)`
3 moles of `O_(2)` produce Pb=3 mol.
96 kg of `O_(2)` produce `Pb=207xx3=621 kg`
1 kg of `O_(2)` produce `PB=(621)/(96)=6.47 kg`
