What happens when phosphorus acids `(H_(3)PO_(3))` is heated ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In phosphorus acid `(H_(3)PO_(3))`, central atom P is in `+3` oxidation state. Upon heating, it gives a mixture `PH_(3)` (P in `-3` oxidation state) and `H_(3)PO_(4)` (P in `+5` oxidation state). This means that phosphorus acid undergoes disproportionation reaction.
