The name halogen is a Greek Work meaning 'sea salt forming'. Sea is a major source of a members of halogens particularly chlorine, bromine and iodine and they exist as the soluble salts of sodium, potassium, calcium magnesium etc. The deposits of dried up sea water contain sodium chloride and carnallite `(KClMgCl_(2).6H_(2)O)`. Sea weeds contain nearly `0*5` percent of iodine. Similarly Chile salt peter contains about `0*2 %` of sodium iodate `(NaIO_(3))`.
