All bonds in the molecule of PCl(5) are ...

All bonds in the molecule of `PCl_(5)` are not equivalent. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

When heated to about 430 K, `PCl_(5)` sublimes and dissociated into `PCl_(3) " and " Cl_(2)`
`PCl_(5) overset(430 K) harr PCl_(3)+Cl_(2)`
This clearly shows that two P-Cl bonds (axial bonds) are quite different from the other three P-Cl bonds (equatorial bonds).
