`XeF_(2)` has linear structure and not a bent structure , Given reason .

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In `XeF_(2)`, the central Xe atom is `sp^(3)` d hybridised. It is surrounded by three lone pairs of electrons and two shared pairs with two atoms of fluorine. The structure of the molecule is trigonal bipyramidal. In order to have a minimum force of repulsion, the three lone pairs of electrons are directed towards the three corners of an equilateral triangle. The two Xe-F bonds are perpendicular to the trigonal plane and are occuping axial positions. The molecule is therefore, linear and not bent.
