The stability of +5 oxidation state decr...

The stability of `+5` oxidation state decreases down the group `15` of the periodic table.Explain this observation giving appropriate reasons.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In group 15 elements (Nitrogen family ), as we move down the group, the `+3` oxidation states of the elements become more and more stable due to the inert pair effect . As a result, valence s-electrons become less available for bond formation and valence p-electrons participate.
