Structure of xenon fluorides cannot be explained by valence bond theory. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Xenon (Xe) is a noble gas element with electronic configuration `5s^(2) 5p^(6)`. Now, 5d orbitals are to participate in the bonding. Since energy difference between 5p and 5d orbitals is quite large `(960 " kJ mol"^(-1))` therefore, participation of 5d orbitals in effective overlapping with the orbitals of F atoms does not seem to be probable.
