The atomic radii of the metals of the th...

The atomic radii of the metals of the third (5d) series of transitions elements are virtually the same as those of the corresponding members of the second (4d) series. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In between-second transition series (4d series ) of transition series (5 series ), fourteen elements (La with Z=57 to Hf with Z=72) are present. Since these elements are involved in the lanthanoids contraction, this effect is obviously experienced by the element of 5d series also. As a result, the difference in the atoic sizes of the element belonging to the two series is negligible. These sizes are virtually the same.

How would you account for the following? (i)The atomic radii of the metals of the third (5d) series of trasition elements are virtually the same as those of the corresponding members of the second (4d) series. (ii)The E^(@) value for the Mn^(3+)//Mn^(2+) couple is much more positive than that for Cr^(3+)//Cr^(2+) couple or Fe^(3+)//Fe^(2+) couple. (iii)The highest oxidation state of a metal is exhibited in itsoxide or fluoride.

How would you account for the following? (i) The atomic radii of the metals of the third (5d) series of transition elements are virtually the same as those of the corresponding member of the second (4d) serie (ii) Because oxygen and fluorine are highly electronegative elements and small in size.

How will you account for the following ? (i) The metallic radii of the third (5d) series of transition metals are virtually the same as those of the corresponding group members of the second (4d) series. (ii) Lanthanoids form primarily +3 ions while actinoids usually have higher oxidation states in their compounds . Among the lanthanoids, Ln(III) compounds are predominant. However, occasionally in solution or in solid state +2 and +4 ions are obtained. Explain.
