Give reasons for the following: (i) Transition elements and their compounds act as catalysts (ii) E^(@) value for (Mn^(2+) | Mn) is negative whereas for (Cu^(2+) | Cu) is positive. (iii) Actinoids show irregularities in their electronic configuration.

Give reason for the following : (i) Mn shows the highest oxidation state of +7 with oxygen but with fluorine, it shows the highest oxidation state of +4 (ii) Transition metals show variable oxidation states. (iii) Actinoids show irregularities in their electronic configurations.

Explain why transition elements have manuy irregularties in their electronic configuration.

The actinoide with atomic number 96 has electronci configuration

Lanthanoids and actinoids are f-block elements in which the last electron enters the anti-penultimate energy level. The most common oxidation state of lanthanoids is +3, though +2 and +4 oxidation states are exhibited by some of the elements. In lanthanoid series, there is a progressive decrease in atomic and ionic radii, known as lanthanoid contraction. Unlike lanthanoids, actinoids show a large number of oxidation states. Which is the last element of the actinoid series? Write its electronic configuration.

What do you understand by the term electronic configuration of an element ? Write down the electronic configuration of oxygen (At No. = 8).
