Predict the number of unpaired electrons...

Predict the number of unpaired electrons in the square planar `[Pt(CN)_4]^(2-)` ion.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The element `Pt(Z=78)` is present in group 10 with electronic configuration `5d^(9)6s^(-1)`. The divalent cation `Pt^(2+)` has `5d^(8)` configuration.

For square planar complex, Pt (II) is in `dsp^(2)` hybridisation state. To achieve this, the two unpaired electrons present in 5d orbitals get paired. The complex has therefore, no unpaired electrons.
