Crystal field theory considers purely ionic bond between metal and ligand. The five d-orbitals in an isolated gaseous metal are degenerate. The degeneracy of the d-orbitals is lost in prsence of ligand which is known as splitting of d-orbitals. Calculate crystal field stabilization energy in [Co(C_(2)O_(4))_(3)]^(3-) in terms of Delta_(0)

In tetrahedral crystal field, three is splitting of d orbitals. Which of the following d orbitals constitute the higher energy set of orbirals.

The splitting diagram for square planar complexes is more complex than for octahedral and tetrahedral complexes and is shown below with the relative energies of each orbital. Calculate crystal field stabilisation energy for a diamagnetic square planar d^(8) metal complex with the help of above diagram neglecting pairing energy (P)

According to crystal field theory d-orbitals split up in octahedral field into two sets. d_("xy")d_("yx")d_("zx") have lower energy and d_(x^(2)-y^(2))" "and" "d_(z^(2)) have higher energy. The difference in energy of these two sets of d-orbitals is called crystal field splitting energy denoted by Delta_(0) . In tetrahedral field d_(x^(2)-y^(2))" "and" "d_(z^(2) have lower energy whereas d_("xy")d_("yz")d_("zx") have higher energy. The difference in energy is denoted Delta_(t) . Delta_(0) can be determined by measuring lambda_("max") for absorption and converting into energy units. Delta_(0) depends upon nature of metal ions as well as nature of ligands. The magnitude of Delta_(0) also decides low energy levels are filled. which one of the following has the highest magnetic moment

Assertion : According to crystal field theory , during complex formation , the d-orbitals split and form two sets of orbitals t_(2g) and e_(g) . Reason : Splitting of d-orbitals occurs only in case of strong field ligands .
