Give the electronic configurations of d-...

Give the electronic configurations of d-orbitals of `K_(3)[Fe(CN)_(6)] and K_(3)[FeF_(6)]` and explain why these complexes give different colours with the same solution .

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`K_(3)[Fe(CN)_(6)]` : oxidation state of Fe = +3

`CN^(-)` ion is a strong field ligand and it cause electron pairing .
Dye to one unpaired electron, complex is paramagnetic in nature.

`F^(-)` ion is a weak field ligand and is not in a positon to cause electron pairing . due to the prescence of five unpaired
electrons , the complexe is highly paramagnetic in nature.
Since the two complexes differ in the number of unpaired electrons , they impart different colours with the same solution .
