These questions consist of two statements each, printed as Assertion and Reason. While answering these questions you are required to choose any one of the following four responses:
Assertion: Potassium ferrocyanide is diamagnetic whereas potassium ferricyanide is paramagnetic.
Reason: Crystal field splitting in ferrocyanide ion is greater than that of ferricyanide ion.

A

If both assertion and reason are correct and reason is correct explanation for assertion .

B

If both assertion and reason are correct but reason is not correct explanation for assertion .

C

If assertion is correct but reason is incorrect

D

If both assertion and reason are incorrect

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
c

Correct reason : In `K_4[Fe(CN)_6]`, Fe has +2 oxidation state while `K_3[Fe(CN)_6]` , oxidation state of Fe is +3 , in general , higher the oxidation state of the metal, more is the crystal field splitting . Thus, the crystal field splitting of `K_3[Fe(CN)_6]` is more than that of `K_4[FeCN)_(6)]`.
