Calculate the minimum thickness of a soap film (n= 1.33) that results in constructive interference in reflected light, if the film is illuminated with light whose wavelength in free space is 532 nm.

A

113nm

B

100nm

C

200nm

D

226nm

The correct Answer is:
B

For constructive interference through a thin film in reflected light, thickness of film must be
`t= (m + (1)/(2)) (lamda)/(2n_(2))`
where, m = 0, 1,2….
and `n_(2)` = refractive index of medium (soap film) With given values, we get
`t = (lamda)/(4n_(2))` (`i_("min")` occurs with m = 0)
`= (532 xx 10^(-9))/( 4 xx 1.33) = 100nm`

A U-shaped wire is dipped in a soap solution, and removed. The thin soap filmformed between the wire and the light slider supports a weight of 1.5×10 −2 N(which includes the small weight of the slider). The length of the slider is 30 cm. what is the surface tension of the film?

A transparent glass plate of thickness 0.5 mm and refractive index 1.5 is placed infront of one of the slits in a double slit experiment. If the wavelength of light used is 6000 A^(@) , the ratio of maximum to minimum intensity in the interference pattern is 25/4. Then the ratio of light intensity transmitted to incident on thin transparent glass plate is
