The horizontal component of the earth's ...

The horizontal component of the earth's magnetic field at a place is `4.0xx10^(-4)`T and the dip is `45^(@)`. A metal rod of length 20 cm is placed in the north-south direction and is moved at a constant speed of 5 cm/s towards east. Calculate the emf induced in the rod.

According to the question, the velocity v, length l and `B_(v)` (vertical component of earth magnetic field) are mutually perpernicular using the relation,
`e=B_(v)vl" "[becausetanphi=(B_(v))/(B_(h))]`
`=B_(h)tan phivl`
`4xx10^(-4)tan45^(@)xx0.05xx0.20=4xx10^(-6)V`
There will be no induced emf due to `B_(h)` (horizontal component of earth magnetic field) because it is parallel to length of rod.
