Find the distance between P(x1,y1)and Q(...

Find the distance between `P(x_1,y_1)`and `Q(x_2,y_2)`when: (i) `P Q`is parallel to the yaxis, (ii) PQ is parallel to the xaxis.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Given that `P(x_(1),y_(1))` and `Q(x_(2),y_(2))`
`:.` Distance between points `P` and `Q`
`PQ=sqrt((x_(2)-x_(1))^(2)+(y_(2)-y_(1))^(2))`…….`(1)`
`(i) :'` Line `PQ` is parallel to `y`-axis.
`:. x_(2)-x_(1)=0`
`implies PQ=sqrt((y_(2)-y_(1)^(2)))=|y_(2)-y_(1)|`
`(ii) :'` Line `PQ` is parallel to `x`-axis.
`:. y_(2)-y_(1)=0`
`implies PQ=sqrt((x_(2)-x_(1))^(2))=|x_(2)-x_(1)|`
