The particle size of the atomosphere is smaller than the wavelength of light. Rayleigh type (coherent type) of scattering of light takes palce. According to Rayleigh.s law, the intensity of light scattered is directly proportional to the intensity of incident light and square of the size of the particle and is inversely proportional to the fourth power of wavelength. Among the lower wavelengths, intensity of blue light is stronger and more sensitive to the eye than the violet. Hence blue light is scattered and the sky appears blue.
`I prop (I_(0)V^(2))/(lambda)`
where, V = volume of the particle,
`lambda` - wavelength the of light scattered
