Draw a neat labelled diagram of a compound microscope and give the expression for its overall magnification.

Here `m_(0)= (L+f_(e))/(-f_(0))` and `m_(1)=1+(D)/(f_(e))` so that overall magnification `m=m_(0)m_(e)=((L+f_(e))/(-f_(0))) (1+(D)/(f_(e)))` for image at near point and `m=((L)/(-f_(0)))((D)/(f_(e)))` for image at infinity.
The image due to the object piece will be formed at or in front of focus of the eye piece.
The distance between the second focal length of the objective and the first focal length of the eye piece is called the tube length (L) of the compound microscope.
