What is sound and how is it produced ?

Sound is a form of energy which makes us hear. Sound is produced when objects vibrate (move back and forth rapidly). For example, sound can be produced:
(i) by vibrating strings (as in a sitar)
(ii) by vibrating air (as in a flute)
(iii) by vibrating membrance (as in a drum), and
(iv) by vibrating plates (as in cymbals)
