What type of bonding would you expect between the following pairs of elements?
(i). Calcium and Oxygen
(ii). Carbon and Chlorine
(iii). Hydrogen and Chlorine

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(i) Ionic Bonding - Since both elements can lose electrons and can form ions. Thus, they form ionic bonding.
(ii) Covalent Bonding - Since, carbon needs four more electrons to complete its octet, it needs to share its electrons with chlorine so that both can attain stable configuration. Thus, they form covalent bonding.
(iii) Covalent Bonding - Both hydrogen and chlorine need one electron to complete their octet so they share the electron to complete its octet. Thus, they form covalent bonding.
