The plates of a parallel plate capacitor...

The plates of a parallel plate capacitor have an area of ` 100 cm^(2)` each and are separated by 3 mm . The capacitor is charged by connecting it to a 400 V supply .
Calculate the electrostatic energy stored in the capacitor .

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Given `A=100 cm^2 =10^2 xx10^(-4)=10^(-2) m^2` ,
d=3 mm = `3xx10^(-3) ` m ,
V=400 V
Electrical energy
`.E.=1/2CV^2=(epsilon_0AV^2)/(2d)`
i.e., `E=(8.854xx10^(-12)xx10^(-2)xx(400)^2)/(3xx10^(-3))`
i.e., `E=2.361xx10^(-6)` J

The plates of a parallel plate capacitor have an area of 100 cm^(2) each and are separated by 3mm. The capacitor is charged by connecting it to a 400 V supply. (a) Calculate the electrostatic energy stored in the capacitor. (b) If a dielectric of dielectric constant 2.5 is introduced between the plates of the capacitor then find the electrostatic energy stored and also change in the energy stored.

The plates of a parallel plate capacitor have an area of 90 cm^2 each and are separated by 2.5 mm. The capacitor is charged by connecting it to a 400 V supply. (a) How much electrostatic energy is stored by the capacitor? (b) View this energy as stored in the electrostatic field between the plates, and obtain the energy per unit volume u. Hence arrive at a relation between u and the magnitude of electric field E between the plates.

A 12pF capacitor is connected to a 50V battery. How much electrostatic energy is stored in the capacitor?
