Account for the decrease in first ionization energy between phosphorous and sulphur.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Phosphorous has a stable half filled configuration, so its first ionization energy is higher than sulphur. This sort of trend is also observed between nitrogen and oxygen where the former has higher first ionization energy.
