Why is it that transverse waves cannot be produced in a gas? Can the transverse waves be produced in solids and liquids?

They travel in the form of crests and troughs and so involve change in shape. They can be produced in a medium which has elasticity in shape . As gas has no elesticity of shape, hence transverse waves cannot be be produced in a gas.
Transverse waves can be produced in solids and on the surface of liquids.
