When a cricket player catches the ball he pulls his hand gradually in the direction of the ball 's motion given reason

If he stops his hands soon after catching the ball then he ball comes to rest very quickly Hence the average force acting on the body will be very large. Due to this large average force the hands will get hurt . The player bring the ball to rest slowly to avoid getting hurt.
